Seven Mindfulness Tips to Reach Your Goals

Featured image full width Audio post

Setting Goals or Getting Goals? Which One is More Important?

Easy question, right?

Setting goals is crucial to achieving what you want.
But you know that already. Don’t you?

You probably set goals before... if it’s to be more present in your relationships, to earn a better income, to improve your health and vitality, to pay off that mortgage that weighs you down, or any other dream you wanted to make a reality.

We all know how easy it is to set goals, and yet… when we’re honest with ourselves - we both know that achieving these goals is a whole different story.

Right?

You’ve probably done this a thousand times before (or more):
You set goals → get excited → life happens → you lose excitement → bye, bye goals.

This pattern can stop right here. Today!

If you find yourself struggling to reach the goals you’ve set for yourself, OR you can't seem to enjoy achieving a goal for more than 5 minutes, before you rush to set the next goal... then these 7 mindfulness tips are gonna turn your life around...

Seven Mindfulness Tips to Help You Achieve Your Goals

1. Find Out What’s Truly Important for You

Take some time to really think about changes you’d like to make in your life.

You might think that to be happier you need to travel more or party more, but what you really need is a partner to share your life with. You might think that you need to earn more money to live a fulfilled life, but what you really need is to simplify your life and spend less.

When you know exactly what your heart needs to feel happy and content, then you’ll also find the courage to achieve your goals.

2. Enjoy the Ride

Most of us were conditioned to strive for the top.
However, success and happiness are not about reaching the top but about enjoying the journey. This is exactly what mindfulness brings into your daily life.

When you climb a mountain, it’s demotivating to only focus on reaching the top, hoping to find bliss and fulfilment on the peak.

Yes, give your 100% to get to the top, but make sure you have plenty of rest during the journey and look back regularly to see how far you’ve come.

3. Find Your Presence

Throughout your journey it’s important you remain true to who you are, and stay calm and present, no matter how chaotic life gets.

Staying centered and present means staying connected to your truest self, your essence, in the moment. Your breath is one of the best tools you have to remain present and focused on the present moment.

Try This:

  • Breath in through your nose for a slow count of 5
  • Pause for the count of 5
  • Exhale out through your mouth on a slow count of 5
  • Pause for the count of 5
  • Repeat 5 times

4. Quiet Your Mind

The breathing exercise above will certainly help you begin the process of settling your mind; sitting in stillness will take this to the next level.

Try This:

  • Set a timer for 10 minutes and find a comfortable way to sit with your eyes closed
  • Choose one word or feeling that you’d like to experience today (e.g. “love”, “joy”, “happiness”, “peace”, “success”...)
  • Choose one word that you would like to release from your life today (e.g. “fear”, “doubt”, “negativity”, “anger”...)
  • When you inhale, silently say to yourself the word you’d like to experience more today.
  • When you exhale, silently say to yourself the word you’d like to release today.

Repeat this mindfulness practice for 10 minutes.

5. Connect with Your Heart

Place one hand on your heart as you focus your attention on your goals. Close your eyes and get curious for what will come up.

Allow your mind and heart to consider your goals - what pops up?

Do certain goals make you feel tense or anxious?
Do other goals fill you with joy or excitement?

If you feel strongly about certain goals (either positive or negative), stay with these goals for a moment and just notice what comes up without judgment. Try to understand the message your heart is sending you.

6. Visualize the End Result

Imagine for a moment that you have achieved these goals already.
Focus on those goals that came up when you connected with your heart - the ones that came with positive emotions.

One at a time, visualize for a moment, that you’ve already reached the goal, and achieved total success in this area of your life.

Notice all of the details that come along with this success, including your feelings, your motivations, your actions and your interactions with others.
Spend a few minutes with each of your goals.

7. Set Your Mind Right

Repeat positive affirmations for reaching goals twice a day - for a few minutes as you wake up in the morning and a few minutes before going to sleep.

This practice will get your subconscious to support you on your path to reaching your goals during the day, and… while you’re asleep.

In our experience, when you take a few minutes to repeat your affirmation before falling asleep, you will often wake up in the morning with ideas or solutions that would take you further on your path to reach your goals.

So I started directly and it worked. Thank you.

  • Pascale van den Heede says:

I am in the middle of a divorce and wake up at night overthinking my life.

So this night (before reading your tips) I visualized the words peace, safe, love and did the 5 count breathing. Furthermore because it is difficult in these times to have a positive mindset, I decided to continue my singing lessons that I started in a 3 day workshop this summer.

Not that I am a good singer, but singing and performing takes me to another level. Because I want to feel good to achieve the positive goals in my life, that is what I am going to do!

    Thank you very much! Pascale

    • Vered Neta says:

Thanks so much for you valuable and important comment Pascale.

Singing is a fantastic way to support you on such a challenging time. Practicing mindfulness could help you with overthinking and repetitive thoughts that put you down.

  • Hi, thanks to the Open Circles courses that I took 11/10 years ago, nine years ago I had the courage to rent a 5 room house for my practice, and to make it into a place for several paramedical practices.

We have had a wonderful time here. Now it is up for renovation and after that for living, so we have to leave. And most have left and found an other place to work.

I have not found an other place yet, and time is becoming short. Sometimes I think I will stop working completely, but other times… I have to change the way I work, and in my quest for a new space I have the criterium that I have to feel happy about it, happy to go there, happy to be there.

My goal can be to find a good place to work, but I don’t know if it is a right goal, or if it is better to stop working.
So my goal is now: whatever is good for me will come, and I am ready to receive it.

    • Vered Neta says:

Thanks for your wonderful sharing and contribution Jantina.

Just one small tip, if I may… The Universe works WITH you, however it cannot respond unless you give a direction.

It works like a GPS. If you say “take me somewhere” it cannot navigate.
But if you give it a direction you can start the journey and see what you get and if it is the right way for you.

  • Thank you for your support. I feel you really love all of us and wish us true happiness. Most importantly, you are a model of happiness and involvement.

I find all 7 goals essential, and I could not miss any of them.
For me especially step 7 is crucial, cause I glide into forgetfulness and that is painful.

To be in touch with my passion helps to remember, so step 1 and 7, bridged by 6, while enjoying the rude too….. Yes! have a wonderful day, cherish the seasons!

    • Vered Neta says:

Thanks Katerina for your important contribution.

One of the way of avoiding slipping into our old habits and forgetfulness, as you call it, is practicing Mindfulness which makes you quickly aware of what you are doing in the moment.

  • Since I met you Nisandeh en Vered I started to learn more and more about visualizations.

I practice it at the beginning of a year to set and visualized/imagine my goals.
